The challenge
Uttra News focuses on the local news of 9 districts of Uttarakhand, India. Apart from trending news, it also covers national, and International news. Uttra News was seeing a falling trajectory in their website traffic and advertising revenue.
Under the GNI Advertising Lab program, Readwhere worked closely with Uttra News to do a detailed assessment of their website. It covered aspects such as Core Web Vitals, website performance (Page Speed, Best Practices on Images and CSS, Technical Site Optimisation, Lazy Loading), AMP and advertising optimisation like Ad placements for higher viewability, Auto Ads and Interstitial Ads. Since 90% of the users were active on mobile devices, a speedy mobile web experience was essential. A Progressive Web Application (PWA) on https://m.uttranews.com was created to optimise the website on mobile.
The results
After the implementation of the PWA and AMP, the following results have been achieved:
- Increase in page views by 184%.
- The page load time has dropped by 78%.
- The average page load time dropped to 7 seconds from 25 seconds.
- Because of AMP and the page speed index improvements, the organic traffic from search and discover has increased 10X.
- The revenue of Uttra News has increased by 484% after the above optimisations.
